The perimeter of a stop sign is 96 inches what is the radius?
A stop sign is a regular octagon cut from a circular piece of metla 1/9 in thick. Each of the vertices of the octagon lies on the circle. whats the area of the circle and the area of the stop sign also ?
This one is tough. I'm assuming that you are taking a trig class, so you'll be familiar with some of these things to follow...
I started by drawing the octagon, and drawing lines from the center to each vertex, which breaks it up into 8 congruent triangles. Let's look at just one triangle. The angle in this triangle at the center of the octagon, let's call C. Because there are 360 degrees in a circle, and the octagon has been broken up into 8 triangles, angle C=45 degrees (360/8=45). Also, we know that this is an isoceles triangle, because the two sides that form angle C are congruent to each other, because they each go from a vertex to the center. Therefore, the other two angles (let's call them A and B) are also equal to each other. Since there are 180 degrees in a triangle, and 45 degrees are already given to C, the remainder divided by 2 will be the measure of A and of B.
(180-45)/2=67.5
So, angle A=67.5 degrees and angle B=67.5 degrees. Here comes the trig part. Using the following identity, find the length of the side a opposite angle A, and of the side b opposite angle B. (Where side c is the side opposite angle C. We know side c is 12 inches, because it is one of the sides of the octagon, which has 8 sides. 96 in/8=12 in).
a/sin A = b/sin B = c/sin C
We know the measures of a and b, and of angle A and angle B, are the same, so let's just use one of these fractions in our identity.
a/sin 67.5 = 12/sin 45
a = (12/sin 45)*sin 67.5
a = 15.68 inches
So, side a is 15.68 inches, and side a is the side of the triangle from the center of the octagon to the vertex. We know the vertices also lie on the circle, so side a is also a radius of the circle. Use pi*r^2 to find the area of the circle.
radius = 15.68 inches
area circle = pi*15.68^2 = 772.27 inches^2
Ok, circle done. Now to find the area of the stop sign. We need to find the area of our little triangle first, which means we need the height. Draw a dotted line from angle A to side a, so that it meets side a at a 90 degree angle. This is our height. Look at the triangle now as an even smaller triangle, with b as one side, the height as another side, and the part in between the 90 degree angle and angle C as the third side. Use the same trig identity as before to find the height, which is across from angle C.
angle C = 45 degrees
side b = 15.68 in
angle across from side b = 90 degrees
c/sin C = b/sin "new B"
c/sin 45 = 15.68/sin 90
c = (15.68/sin 90)*sin 45
c = 11.09
Ok, 11.09 is the height, and we still have 15.68 as the base, because that was the length of side a. Area of a triangle is base*height/2:
11.09*15.68/2 = 86.93 inches^2
This is just the area of one triangle though, so multiply by 8 to get the area of the whole stop sign.
86.93*8=695.40 inches^2 = area of stop sign
