Hidden Gems in London Town by Roberta Stuart
There are plenty of great things to see for those staying in Hyde Park hotels. London's history and development has forged a city in which you could easily visit something new each day and after a year you'd still have plenty left to see. Like all large cities, the U.K.'s largest conurbation has developed over time from hundreds of smaller villages and towns. This means that it has both a collective flavour, as well as strongly distinct districts. Thanks to this kind of growth, there are plenty of hidden gems that are well away from the regular tourist traps. If you're based somewhere central, such as one of the many Hyde Park hotels, London's hidden history isn't far away:
The Oldest House in the City
While it's not the oldest house inside the M25, 41 Cloth Fair has the fine honour of being the oldest house in the City of London proper. The organic growth of the narrow streets and houses piled on top of each other during the middle ages led to an arrangement that was a breeding ground for disease and deprivation. When September 1666 rolled round, the destruction of the Great Fire of London both cleaned out the area and simultaneously destroyed many historic buildings - gutting the City of London. Thanks to being enclosed between a large set of priority walls, 41 Cloth Street survived. For those staying in Hyde Park hotels, London Underground travel to the site is straight forward: take the Piccadilly line from Hyde Park Corner, change at Kings Cross St Pancras, and take any of the Hammersmith and City, Circle, or Metropolitan line eastwards to Barbican - the house is a short walk from the station.
Pickering Place
Located nice and close to the Hyde Park hotels, London's history is condensed to a rich stock in this single space. A small courtyard located close to Green Park (a short walk from Hyde Park), this area was the site of the independent Texas Republic's embassy to the U.K. Claimed to be the smallest square in Britain, it is also apparently the last place in Britain that a duel was fought. This is still a fantastic place to visit today. The quiet courtyard features impressive Georgian architecture and original gaslights, providing a truly traditional atmosphere to the area. The quintessential London-ness of the area today is somewhat deceptive - the seclusion of the area led to it developing into one of the most notorious gambling dens in the city. If gambling wasn't enough, the area was also popular for bear-baiting and duelling - not bad for the country's smallest square!
